PANDEVILLE by Manuel Avenido

Mrs. Brown sat at the cashier’s table with eyes gleaming with emptiness. She was pokerfaced. On her lap was a dog I always heard they call Daisy. She was stroking her white furs with her left hand while her right was holding a pen, but she intended to write nothing. She looked blankly outside, on the road right next to her bakeshop, unperturbed by the passing of the jeepneys.
Daisy was a shitzu. She was just among Mrs. Brown’s many pets in her house.
I know that she has also this really peculiar cat but I didn’t get its name, it’s not my intention to do so either. The lady-helpers in the bakeshop said he’s Mrs. Brown’s favorite.
I should know that. The moment the cat rubbed his slender body against Mrs. Brown’s foot, she instantly came into her being, as if she was awaken from a long, dragging sleep. Swiftly Mrs. Brown put Daisy aside from one corner and grabbed the cat and started kissing and fondling its shiny ash gray and black furs. Daisy, at once, woke up from her comfortable sleep and tilted her head up with eyes a little bit misty.
“Do animals get jealous, too?” at the back of my mind I said. I was just sitting outside, in one of those round tables where customers of the bakeshop used to eat their breads and drink their softdrinks. With an array of breads in different sizes and colors in between us displayed and piled blatantly inside a clear glass casing, serving as a division for the lady-helpers inside the store and the customers outside, I could gaudily see Mrs. Brown inside. I could see her dark, sun-burnt, and blemished cheeks due to the harsh astringent. She was in her late forties and married an American who settled with her in this country for quite a long time already. The neighborhood didn’t know much about the Browns but they were talking about them and envied Mrs. Brown for her instant fortune. They just moved in to the village two years ago and they remained elusive from the people.
I was bringing with me my yellow dirty sack. It was Sunday morning. Though the sun had risen already to its peak and its scorching heat was biting my nape, I had to collect the garbage from the boarders of Mrs. Romano at San Roque Village. But I had to stop by Mrs. Brown’s bakeshop hoping a customer would share with me some of his banana cake or a lady-helper would dare give me some spoiled ones. I was expecting for a miracle that day.
The bakeshop was situated beside the gate of the little village, across a barber shop and a massage parlor. I had to decide on what bread to buy once I receive the payment of the boarders. Banana cakes were the best for me. I also adored the cinnamons, German breads, kingrolls, and those purple-colored pastries with buttermelt inside shaped into a yo-yo.
My mother always asked me to buy pan de sal in this bakeshop. She said the bakeshop would be blest for they were selling breads as big as my little sister’s palm, at their regular price. That could be a wholesome painit for our poor family.
“Hey! Snot-nosed boy.” I heard somebody inside the bakeshop yelling at me. It was one of the helpers, the one with vibrant colors painted on her face smearing like oil poured in our pan. “You better go away before we lose our customers. Mr. Brown doesn’t like you staying here.”

I grabbed my sack and jumped off from the bench I was sitting on and left the table immediately. I looked in to the eyes of the helper. She looked back at me. Her eyes were like balls of fire ready to burn me into ashes, and her brows knitted. I made faces to her, imitating a monkey’s and in a split of a second ran as fast as I could away from the bakeshop.
From a distance, I saw the Browns’ black car. It was huge to me; my friends said it’s called a van. Mr. Brown, an old soggy American with a cocky head, went out from the car. He had this unfriendly face and spoke English very oddly, very differently from my grade six English teacher. He sounded like one of those judges in American Idol we used to watch at night. He got inside the bakeshop and his wife got up quickly as if she was facing a dignitary.
The Browns went out from the bakeshop heading toward the car. I could see the faces of the lady-helpers and Noy Lando, the baker, showing some hints of pity and troubles. The helper who sent me off whispered something to another helper. Curious as I was, I moved a little bit closer to the car. Daisy followed the Browns thinking she could get inside the car with her owners. But the poor puppy shrieked like a mad dog when Mr. Brown kicked her. Mrs. Brown neither drew any sign of pity on her face on what had happened to Daisy nor took a glance to the poor shitzu, for she was more scared with her husband. They went inside the car and I heard a loud thud when Mr. Brown closed the door.
The next morning, I was on my way to San Roque Village again to collect some garbage. It was Monday but my mother heard from the radio that we won’t have classes, for there was a holiday that day. “This is a good day to earn a living,” I silently whispered to myself. I didn’t notice how I sounded like an old, mature man.
I was inside the village and the dogs were barking frantically at me. I remembered what my mother said about dogs having strong instincts and how they could easily notice bad elements in their surrounding; I hoped the dogs were not feeling something evil from me. I hoped they also knew I was there for a cause.
Few feet from where I was standing, in a lot and bedrock where grasses capriciously grow, I saw a small maya, seeking for its survival. The bird’s wings were crinkled and she laid flat on the ground. I was thinking she was half-dead. Just as I was about to go nearer to the bird, a cat with shiny ash gray and black furs had come to the bird ahead of me. It was Mrs. Brown’s cat. I can see his yellow eyes and thick whiskers. I supposed he was responsible for the bird’s condition. He was checking the bird with one of his paws if it was still alive. I felt some of my blood going up to my head and my stomach sickened. I stayed still from where I was standing; at the back of my head I was tempted to pick the stone at my feet and throw it to Mrs. Brown’s merciless cat. That was supposedly the least thing I could do to help save the dying bird. But I remained stunned.
For a second, I saw the bird quivered a little. It was still alive. The dogs barked louder and more aggressive not to me that time but to the cat and to its prey. But the cat was a ruthless beast and he was not even afraid of the dogs for they were inside the gates. The cat at last devoured the head of the bird, picked it by his mouth, and left the place like a lightning. My heartbeats stopped for a moment. And I vomited some saliva.
Two days later, a news shocked the neighborhood in San Roque Village. Mrs. Brown was murdered. One of the lady-helpers saw her inside the bakeshop that morning swimming in her own blood. Police described her like a darkened and rotten papaya. Her body was full of bruises – eyes were swollen and black. Mrs. Brown received several stabs as if a beast had mutilated her. The bakeshop was enclosed by yellow lines and policemen were swarming inside the crime scene. I was among the mob outside, from a distant, curiously watching the scene. Few minutes after, two policemen grabbed the arms of Mr. Brown as they led him out from the bakeshop. Flashes of cameras of the press began to greet the suspect. Mr. Brown was escorted inside the police car. His face was heavy and his eyes were still balls of fire.
As the police car sped away and the siren wailed like a woman’s cry, I remembered the maya bird laying flat on the ground devoured by Mrs. Brown’s favorite cat.

Pinoy Opinions on LOVE and LUST

Friday, August 6, 2010

It so happen that I was tagged in this topic in Facebook. I decided to post this topic as there were many people who responded on this and their opinion simply vary from each other. Each thought reflects a modern Filipino's belief and principles with regards to Love and Lust. It is funny that some have westernized thought while the others have a strong belief on morality and highly influenced by the teachings of Christianity.

In this poll, there is no right and wrong opinion. There is only OPINION and everybody is free to express theirs.

Comments:

Fedyl Tumulak i agree with the first statement...lets be more mature nlng gud..Love without Lust can be boring for both parties and relationship..ato lng jud ge lahi ang meaning sa Lust..actualy dghan meaning ang Lust..pro Love with Lust is different..in that way..u can feeL and show your interest to your partner..show that you realy in to him/her...u just need to put and use it in a rightway..........am i correct?..am i?..am i?.. =)

Agnes Basan ‎@ fedz: kuya! congrats!!! mature na lage kaw now! hahahahah! sip.onon pa man ka dati woi...karun, hmmmppp! makahilak man lang ko..bravo! bravo! bravo!

Archie Barrioquinto Sumalindao physiological neeeeedssss'..

Agan Francis Separable man. Peke ba diay nang rape. That's lust in its purest form. No love whatsoever is involved.

Bryan Canhear ‎@agnes: I can't imagine a life without lust while loving..hahahah

Agnes Basan ‎@ bryan: ur right jud..di na xa mawala in a relationship..lust inflames the love u feel for that person..before man gali nimo xa malove, kay u feel physically attracted sa iya diba? and that is, for me, the first stage of lust...

hay nako.... LOVE and LUST can't go together and never will be....Love is a feeling that originates from God."God is Love" and this feeling always reflect God's will.

LUST on the other hand is a feeling that Satan created to tease mankind and to destroy the holiness of man and woman's union. "SEX is holy and a fruit of love and not LUST"

LUST is fleeting while love is forever.
It is Infatuation and LUST that will always go together because both of these are devised by satan...to tempt man....to make his thought dirty.

It is always good to know how to distinguish LOVE, LUST, SEX and INFATUATION and let us not be deceived by the devil's scheme.

LOVE and LUST is separable..coz love and lust is definitely different or it has a great contrast. LOVE will still exist even without lust and LUST will also exist even without love. LUST is a greedy desire to satisfy the flesh and it is not patient, it wants what it wants and at the time it wants it, LOVE on the other hand is from GOD and it is patient (1st cor 13:4), always willing to wait for the right time... If ur lust is driving over u bcoz of the physical attraction for someone then it’s just an INFATUATION involved not a REAL LOVE (INFATUATION -is just love of emotion. Only the emotions are affected. It is more interested in satisfying yourself and your "feelings" than it is in the other person while REAL LOVE though, is love of devotion, both the Emotions and Will are involved. It seeks to give instead of get..Love is about giving and lust is only focused on taking. The best Sex(make love) you can ever have is when you’re both for eachother- giving, not about what you can take. However, although, lust is a natural part of being human but it could still separable from love.

Jayson Patalinghug I would agree to you Dar....I hope the others would learn ti distinguish which is God's plan and which belongs to the devil....this post is a nice opportunity though to share you guys what real love is. Be aware of the devils scheme!

Dar Elaine Ebcas ahehe. thank u for agreeing sir. and your right sad gyud.hmmm. this could probably help someone's mind on what is the real sense of LOVE between lust and GOD to devil (evil). toink:D

Garry Burgonios mao na ako gi hulatan na chubag>! ahha

Agnes Basan Let's face it..it's not that most people have superficial opinions..di naman cguro ibig sabihin na if u agree that they are inseperable would directly mean na u have to go to bed with ur partner kasi love mo xa..lust has broad definition..in a way that it involves physical urges and pleasure...it's not evil as others put at it..but simply a drive that human feels naturally..it becomes evil if u've let it go at the wrong time..

Xyrene Escobido steph:tama jud ka mameh...wel,hnuon i do agree with agnes ke mag.uban man jud na cla duha naa nlang sa inyo mag.uyab kung n.u i.pursue ang lust...:)

Meljer M. Lozano in the present.. many couples separated because of less sexual encounter towards its partner... that what makes the relationship keeps on burning. it is maybe inseparable, but its not very much necessary. when a person feels a great LOVE he can conquer and sacrifice everything even his sexual desire... but we can choose: we can have LUST without LOVE or we can LOVE without LUST or we can LOVE with a LUST... i mean, that would depends on how we craft things out, how we use this thing to work on a relationship. so use them very wisely

‎@DAR and JAYSON: I agree with both of you.

@AGNES: it doesnt mean that if u kiss ur partner there's a lust. u just giving her/him a sense of comfort, affection and a pleasure on how u really love him/her.

love and lust is separable. lust is a dangerous (evil things) because it causes a man to think with his crotch and throw all reason and logic to the wind. When a man's in lust he doesn't care if he and his partner have anything in common. He's not interested in where she comes from or where she's going. His brain is only focused on using his key to unlock the door to the secret cave. LOve is a total and has a fullest commitment. A commitment that lead into a high stage of putting someone's heart a real sense of happiness even without a so-called SEX.

Here are a few tips to help you sort things out.
if it's lust:

You're totally focused on her looks and body.

Even before you know her name, you're already fantasizing about what she looks like naked and what it would be like to have sex with her.
You don't care about anything she has to say.
It wouldn't make a difference to you if you never had a conversation with her. Furthermore, you don't bother to return her calls promptly and you can easily go for days without talking to her -- until you get horny again.
You only want to be with her to have sex.
You make excuses not to spend time with her, except for sex. And if she asks you for a favor, you tell her you're too busy. But if you have to be with her and not have sex, she gets on your nerves and you find yourself fantasizing about other women.
She's your booty call.
After you go out trolling for tail with your buddies on Friday night, you then call her at 1 a.m. for some drunken action. Ah, the booty call.
You leave after sex.
After having sex with her, you look for the easiest way to leave. No cuddling, no breakfast the next morning, just "I gotta go."
It's love if:
You have great chemistry.
You get lost in your conversations, and the hours pass like minutes. You're more than willing to listen to her when she talks about her day. The chemistry between you is remarkable.
You find her beautiful.
Even if you catch her with no makeup on and her hair pulled back while she's unclogging a toilet, she still looks beautiful to you.
You want to spend time with her.
All you want to do is to be with her, whether you're having sex or not. Even if she tells you that sex will have to wait, you don't care.
You see a future together.
You experience the strange feeling that your life would be totally empty without her. You tell your friends and family that she may be The One, and you're even thinking about marrying her.
You introduce her to your family.
It becomes very important to you that your parents like her, and that she gets along with everyone close to you.
You include her in all your plans.
Whether you're going out with your male friends or taking your dog for a walk, you want her there with you. And if she's not there, you can't get her off your mind and sneak off to give her a quick "I miss you" phone call. Of course, you don't tell your buddies.
You are more romantic.
All of a sudden you find yourself listening to cheesy romantic songs and thinking of her. You send her flowers and love notes or a letter/blog about how u really care and love her very much to work and set up romantic evenings candlelit dinners at home.
You always take her side.
If someone says anything even slightly disparaging about her, you immediately rise to her defense. Furthermore, in social gatherings, you always agree with her even if you disagree behind closed doors.
She makes you want to be a better man.
She challenges and motivates you. She makes you happy, and you'd do anything to make her happy.
Even though the two (love and lust) sometimes masquerade as each other, you should be able to tell the difference.

Aswang: Mythical Creature

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

The awang are the most feared of supernatural creatures on the Philippines. They can enter the body of a person and through this person they inflict harm on those the they dislike. Most common are the female variety who appear as an ugly old woman with long, unkempt hair, blood-shot eyes, long nails, and a long, black tongue. She has holes in her armpits which contain oil. This gives her power of flight.

A being of enormous power, she can transform herself into any shape, even inanimate objects. She preys on children, pregnant women, and ill people. Once she has overpowered a victim, she will take a bundle of sticks, talahib grass, and rice or banana stalks, and transform these into a replica of her victim. This replica is sent home while she takes the real person back with her. Upon reaching its home, the replica will become sick and die. The victim will then be killed and eaten. She is said to be particularly fond of the liver.

I had a real experienced of seeing this monster, I was a young boy at that time and our house was in a small barrio (small town) with only few neighbors and surrounded with trees. The wife of our neighbor was pregnant at that time and their house was a small hut with windows that cant be closed, which simply means you can see the stars in their house during night time. It was a very noisy mid-night that i could not sleep, our neighbor dogs keeps howling in our backyards. So, I tried to check it, I slightly-openned our window good enough for my eyes to see everything outside, I am fascinated because the moon was so bright and there was no dogs in our backyard so i look at our neighbor's house and there i saw the howlong dogs, BUT WHEN I LOOKED AT THE WINDOW, I SAW SOMETHING DARK FLOATING - ITS LIKE A PERSON FLOATING HORIZONTALLY FACING OUR NEIGHBOR'S OPENNED WINDOW. I was very scared because its hard to describe that dark floating thing, even the surrounding was clear. I closed the window and went straight to my bed covering myself with my pillow and sleep again.
On the next day I talked to my friend about what happened last night, and i asked him if there was something unusual that happened in their house that night. He said he and his siblings were guarding their mother all the time and they were aware of the possible attacks of the Aswang. He told me had stepped something like a hairy tail and then he had thrown Garlic unto it and then it suddenly disappeared.

There are a wide variety of stories about the Aswang circulating between rural Filipinos, making it impossible to settle upon any fixed definition of their appearance or activities. However, one trademark or defining feature of Aswangs which distinguishes them from other Filipino mythological creatures is their propensity to replace live victims or stolen cadavers with a facsimile that it creates out of tree trunks and other plant materials. Aswangs are particularly feared for their fondness for eating unborn fetuses and small children. Their favorite body parts are the liver and heart.

By some accounts, Aswangs are said to be able to enter the body of a person and through this person they inflict harm on those the they dislike. Most commonly, they are female and appear as an ugly old woman with long, unkempt hair, blood-shot eyes, long nails, and a long, black tongue. She has holes in her armpits which contain oil. This gives her power of flight.
